Brazilian Butt Lift Doctor Accused of Medical Malpractice
Many aspects of this case sound too unlikely to be true, but nonetheless, a Florida doctor has been accused of mismanaging a Brazilian Butt Lift that resulted in a patient’s death. It took two years for the state of Florida to realize the incompetence of this particular doctor and charge him with medical malpractice.
The question, of course, is why?
In an instance in which a patient dies due to medical malpractice, they may have no one who can legally sue on their behalf. The situation flies under the radar, in this case, for two years until evidence surfaces that the doctor did, in fact, do something wrong. Now, he’s being charged by the state.
If the woman had lived, news of this kind of medical incompetence might have come to the surface earlier. That’s because she would have been entitled to damages from the doctor who performed the surgery.
The surgeon’s clinic had been cited for health and safety violations on numerous occasions. One woman says that when she went to his practice she saw dozens of women who were herded in and out of operating rooms like it was a factory assembly line.
One Florida resident, who chose the doctor to perform her plastic surgery, contracted MRSA, an antibiotic-resistant “superbug”. She ended up with physical deformities to her abdomen as a result of the surgery.
Is Florida Partially to Blame for this Problem?
Despite the surgeon being charged with accused of medical negligence and malpractice, Florida has a shaky history when it comes to holding doctors accountable for medical malpractice. Even those who lose malpractice cases are very rarely held accountable by administrative committees or state regulators. It has created a situation in which the same doctor may be charged with sued for medical malpractice multiple times before anyone recognizes there is an issue with their approach to the practice of medicine.
That was exactly what happened with the surgeon mentioned above. When word of mouth traveled that he had botched the surgery of patients, he would simply change the name of his clinic and begin practicing under a new name.
The case of this surgeon shows Florida regulators have an extremely high bar when it comes to medical incompetence.
It was only not until a 29-year-old West Virginia woman died of complications related to her surgery that anyone took notice. But beforehand, the surgeon was allowed to repeatedly maim and disfigure patients and then discharge them to hotel rooms or even horse stables.
He was allowed to practice in unsafe and unsanitary conditions without even being a board certified plastic surgeon.
A Brazilian Butt Lift is a procedure where a surgeon removes fat from the stomach and back and injects into the rear. The procedure is performed safely in clinics all across America. This surgeon negligently injected the fat into a vein that led to clots in her lungs and heart. Two years afterward, he is being sued for malpractice.
